Heart Health and Gum Disease

2/14/2020

People with gum disease are two to three times more likely to have a heart attack, stroke, or another cardiovascular event. Research continues to show a connection between gum disease and heart disease. Gum disease is silent, has even slight bleeding, really isn’t terribly painful, and will cause tooth loss and poor over health if not treated properly.

Proper Dental Care to Avoid Plaque and Tartar Buildup
1. Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes, paying close attention to the gum line.
2. Floss at least once a day to help prevent gum disease. Brushing alone isn’t enough to maintain a healthy dental care routine. Flossing removes plaque and leftover food from between the teeth and spaces that your brush can’t reach.
3. Visit the dentist three times a year for an oral exam and professional cleaning. Make sure you’re honest with your dentist about symptoms like swollen or bleeding gums even if it’s a little bit. With regular examinations, x-rays, periodontal evaluations, and saliva testing, your dentist can check for developments that might be connected to other health issues.
4. Stop all tobacco use from your routine. Not only is it better for your overall health, it will also improve your smile.
5. Know your risk. Age, diet, and genetics all play a role in your risk for periodontal disease. If there are specific risk factors that you’re aware of, discuss them with your dentist.

A healthy smile contributes to a healthy heart and happy longer life. If you haven’t made your routune dentist appointments yet, do so today. Looking for a dentist? Call us today at 630-620-8099 and visit our website at www.ligockidentalgroup.com.
