March Mix: Is an Electric Toothbrush Better?, Thank You Wheaton!, & New Faces at Ligocki Dental Group

Is an Electronic Toothbrush Better?

Many of us do not realize how important it is to use the right toothbrush. We typically rely on the sample we get after our visit with our hygienist every 3-6 months or we pick up a cheap option at our local grocery store. To us, all toothbrushes are basically the same, and we do not see a reason to invest in an electric version.

While using a manual brush is better than nothing, we at Ligocki Dental Group want you as our patients to make the switch to electric. These brushes help ensure that you get your mouth as clean as possible--reducing your risk for cavities and developing gingivitis (which can lead to additional overall health issues).

You can also tell the difference when you switch to electric. Once you understand what it can mean for your oral and overall health, most of you will be happy to make the extra investment in your smile.

Why Should I Go Electric?

We love patients that help us to help them to provide better health by changing and keeping up their home care routine! Shea has become a rock star and she can feel the difference too. She brushes in the morning and before bed with the Philips Sonicare For Kids electric toothbrush (yes, she's a kid at heart) (see smartphone app progress chart) and rinses with our OraCare Health Rinse. Then during the day at work she uses a great travel brush with the Quip after she eats lunch. Shea even sets reminders on her phone so there is no slacking off. Great job!
Electric toothbrushes offer a variety of advantages, no matter what your oral condition is. These brushes do the work for you at 30,000 strokes per minute compared to a traditional manual brush at 200 strokes per minute. Many even feature a timer to ensure that you are brushing for a full 2 minutes, as well as a pressure indicator light to let you know when you are brushing too hard and possibly damaging your gums. All you have to do is move your electric toothbrush from tooth to tooth and let the brush do the work for you! This helps reduce inflammation, remove plaque, and reduce hypersensitivity. Phillips Sonicare brushes penetrate deep below the gum line to disrupt the bacterial environment, while Oral-B brush heads oscillate in a half-circle motion to remove biofilm from the tooth surface.
For those of you or your kids that are going through braces or orthodontic work, it is important to have great at home oral health habits. If you are not brushing properly, you can end up with white spots where the brackets are, and they can only be fixed by drilling on the tooth and placing a filling or a crown. So, we recommend to make a small investment in using an electric brush and us as your dental team help you learn how to use your electric toothbrush.

Elderly patients with dexterity issues can also benefit from electric toothbrushes. Many older patients can not move their hands the way they need to, so if they use a manual brush, they are likely leaving plaque behind. An electric version cleans their teeth for them, so as long as they get it close to where it needs to be, it is going to help remove plaque and prevent problems.

Need Help to Find The Right Electric Toothbrush For You?

With the countless of electric toothbrush models and replacements out there, ask us at your next appointment and we can help guide you to choosing the correct brush that will lead you to not only better oral health but overall health as well!
