As recently as 2023, there were 53,000 new cases of mouth and throat cancer diagnosed. However, many people are unaware of the need for cancer screening and regular dental exams.

Cancer can affect any part of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, and back of the mouth and throat. The risk of mouth and throat cancer increases with age. Using tobacco and alcohol together, as well as poor oral hygiene, also increase your risk.

Other factors may increase the risk for cancer as well. Current research shows that some types of human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cancer in the back of the mouth or throat. HPV is very common —many people have the virus in their bodies and don't even know it. People who often spend long periods of time in the sun are at higher risk for lip cancer. A diet with too few fruits and vegetables may also increase the risk for cancer.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is Oral Cancer Awareness month and The Oral Cancer Foundation would like to invite you to join us in our national screening campaign to end oral cancer! Oral Cancer awareness in the American public is low. Approximately 58,500 people in the U.S. will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer this year. 160 new people in the US EVERY DAY will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer, and that one person EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY will die from it (The Oral Cancer Foundation, 2024).

While smoking and tobacco use are still major risk factors, the fastest-growing segment of oral cancer patients is young, healthy, nonsmoking individuals due to the connection to the HPV virus. We cannot stop this virus from spreading; our only hope to save lives is with professional involvement and public awareness. Regular Cleaning v.s. Periodontal Maintenance

Patients often ask why they are having “periodontal maintenance” when all they want is to have their teeth cleaned. If your dentist has recommended for you to be seen for your periodontal maintenance, or if you have noticed that your insurance is processing these procedures differently, here is a brief explanation:

Prophylaxis (Regular Cleaning)

A regular cleaning is recommended for patients who have healthy gums , and do not have bone loss , or infection/inflammation in the gums around their teeth . All of which are indicators of periodontal disease. There should be no bleeding, looseness of the teeth, receding gums and bone, or areas where roots of the teeth are exposed. The patient’s mouth should be healthy with no bone or gum problems. A regular cleaning, or prophylaxis removes soft plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth above the gum line , and only slightly below. A regular cleaning is usually done two times a year or every 6 months. This regular cleaning is considered a preventive procedure by insurance carriers.

Periodontal Maintenance

When a patient has periodontal disease that has resulted from gum infection and inflammation, bone loss, gum “pockets” deeper than 4 millimeters, bleeding gums, exposed root surfaces, or if the patient has had scaling and root planing (deep cleaning) or periodontal surgery to treat periodontal disease, a regular cleaning is not the appropriate treatment . Periodontal maintenance is needed to maintain gum and bone health. This procedure includes removal of plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line along the root of each tooth to where the gum, root, and bone meet . Gum pocket depths are carefully monitored. The tartar on the roots of the teeth are removed if needed. Inflamed and infected pockets may be irrigated with antibacterial medicines and/or localized antibiotics are placed if necessary.

Periodontal maintenance is considered a basic service by insurance carriers. So the patient may be subjected to a yearly deductible and a percentage of the procedure may be paid.

Periodontal maintenance is usually performed 3-4 months, depending on several factors:

How much infection or inflammation is present
How quickly the plaque and tartar accumulate
How much bleeding occurs
How stable the present condition is
Other health risk factors the patient may have like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.
How well the patient is able to maintain his/her teeth at home on a daily basis between professional maintenance visits.

Dentists and physicians know there is a relationship between chronic inflammation in the gums and overall health, especially heart disease, stroke, and diabetic patients. Keeping the gums and the jawbone surrounding your teeth as healthy as possible is an important part of your overall health.

February is filled with things to recognize and celebrate! Toothache Day kicks off our month on the 9th, while Tooth Fairy Day closes us out on the 28th. Plus, all month long is Children's Dental Health Month and Gum Disease Awareness Month! There's so much to show our care for, with the main one being your smile.

Our philosophy: when it comes to pain, don't treat it like a game! Even though some pain management can be taken care of at home, the best thing to do is to come in and let us have a look at what's going on. Not only will we be able to get to the bottom of it quicker, but we can easily begin treating the issue rather than having to accept the discomfort and waiting to see if it'll ever go away.

Something else to keep in mind is that there are factors that can play a role in our oral health that are out of our control. So, there's no need to shy away from coming in to make sure your health is taken care of even if your dental hygiene routine is perfectly in line. Speaking of routines, and in honor of Children's Dental Health Month, it goes a long way to set sustainable and fun examples to the kiddos in our lives when it comes to brushing and flossing habits. Should I Enroll In A Dental Plan?

Even though you are not required to sign up for dental insurance during the open enrollment period under the Affordable Care Act, it is wise to select a dental plan at the same time you choose your medical plan. Since you are already taking the time to complete the enrollment for medical coverage, it makes sense to get a dental plan, because taking care of your oral health and overall health are extremely important. A key step in that process is choosing the kind of dental benefit coverage you will need over the next year. Enrolling in a quality dental insurance plan can help you and your family save on the costs of routine dental treatment as well as any major dental treatment you may require.

Medicare Members May Want To Consider A VIP Membership Plan

For seniors who are electing Medicare or making changes to their supplements, open enrollment can also be a good time to consider a supplemental dental plan because Medicare does not include any dental benefits for seniors. After listening to many of our patients tell us that their Medicare dental plans are very limited, they have come to enjoy our VIP membership plan .

Selecting A Dental Plan As An Individual

Very little has changed to increase the lack of dental insurance coverage options since the Affordable Care Act. Dental plan options are fewer and far more expensive per month. While the cost of coverage can vary greatly among the different types of insurance plans, most plans have a low annual coverage limit ranging from $1,000-$1,500. Patients can choose from a traditional dental insurance, a PPO, a HMO, a reduced discount dental plan, or our VIP membership plan.

Traditional dental insurance plans help you fit the cost of expensive dental treatments into your budget up to an allowed maximum amount, usually after a waiting period, and an annual deductible of $50 to $150. Traditional plans allow you to see any dentist or dental specialist, though these plans have high premiums and are becoming less available.
Dental PPO plans allow you to get care from any dentist or dental specialist, though you will save more on your treatment if you choose to see an in-network dentist from a limited list of providers. PPO plans also have new plan members wait anywhere from a few months to a year and a half before they can have coverage for more expensive treatments such as root canals, dentures, crowns, and bridges.
Dental HMO plans require members to stay within a network for treatment, and sign up with a particular dentist that they choose from a specific list of HMO dentists. All referrals to dental specialists must also be within the HMO network. While there is often no waiting period imposed before coverage begins, an HMO plan may limit the number of times that you can see a dentist annually.
Reduced Discount Dental Plans are a way to help save on dental care costs, while patients must select a dentist from a small list of doctors that have contracted with that particular discount plan.

Healthy Gums vs. Unhealthy Gums – The Big Difference in Oral and Overall Health

Most people take care of their teeth. When some people feel the discomfort of a cavity they schedule an appointment to go to their dentist. Many patients do not feel gum or bone disease until it is too late. So, what do healthy gums look like? Unquestionably, healthy gums have a healthy pink color throughout the entire mouth, follow the contour of the teeth, and are not receded exposing the roots of the teeth. Gums should not bleed from brushing or flossing.

3 out of 4 adults in the United States are affected by periodontal disease (gum disease). This is the leading cause of tooth loss. When detected in time gum disease can be treated successfully . Treating and preventing gum disease brings great health benefits. Research has associated periodontal infection to several serious medical problems including: heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Keeping one’s gum and jawbone healthy, one can enjoy meals, chew comfortably, have better digestion, and a better overall health. A healthy smile also creates a wonderful appearance and an increase in self confidence.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease affects the supporting tissue (gums and jawbone) of your teeth. Inflammation and bleeding are the first signs of unhealthy gums usually caused by improper brushing and flossing habits at home. If a patient experiences bleeding while brushing or flossing and sees the color red or blood in the sink, then there is a good chance they have early onset gingivitis. In gingivitis, the early stages of periodontal disease, gum tissue may become red, swollen, and bleed easily. As pockets become filled with bacteria, infection forms around the teeth causing a more advanced stage of periodontal disease or advanced periodontitis, where the gum and jawbone supporting the teeth are destroyed. When the disease progresses, teeth become loose and may require surgery, extractions, or replacement with implants, bridges, or partials.

The Warning Signs

Periodontal (gum and bone) infection is usually painless until it reaches a more advanced stage. Here are other signs of unhealthy gums indicating periodontal disease:

Red gums
Swollen, puffy gums
Bleeding when brushing (red toothbrush or red in the sink)
Bad breath
Aching, itchy, sore or tender gums
Receding gums (exposed roots of teeth)
Pockets between the teeth and gums
Pus between the teeth and gums
Foul taste
Teeth moving
Spaces between teeth
Changes in the way teeth fit together when biting
Partial dentures that begin to not fit properly

February is National Children's Dental Health Month!

Dental visits can be intimidating for children, but one way to get rid of that fear before it can even form is exposure! Prioritizing healthy smiles in our young children will help them to feel comfortable with dental visits.

The theme of this year's National Children's Dental Health Month (NCDHM) is "Sealants Make Sense!" Sealants on children's teeth can help reduce the risk of caries, or progressive destruction of bone or tooth by decay, in molars by up to 80%. The earlier children can get sealants on their molars, the better. {Cavity Prevention} The moment your child's first tooth comes in it is susceptible to developing a cavity. A cavity is a hole in the tooth caused by bacteria. It may not be painful at first, but the cavity if left untreated then it can hurt. Even worse the developing infection can not only spread to other parts of that tooth but also your child's body.

There are many ways you can help prevent cavities in your child:

Introduce your child to good dental habits early
Schedule his/her first dental visit once his/her first tooth comes in
Brush his/her teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
Clean between (floss) teeth that are side by side once daily
Limit sugary snacks and drinks
Limit juice/milk/soda pop drinking only to meals
4oz for children 1-3 years old
4-6oz for children 4-6 years old
8oz for children 7-18 years old

How Sleep is Causing You to Gain Weight

"There is a not-so-silent killer that is preventing you from losing weight.

This killer is called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) . Not only can OSA take one decade off of your life if it goes untreated, it is also stopping you from losing the weight that you are working hard to get rid of.

OSA occurs when there is an anatomical collapse in your body that blocks your airway intermittently when you're sleeping. This causes you to repeatedly stop and start breathing throughout your sleep.

So how does obstructive sleep apnea affect your weight?

Here’s the punch in the gut: if you have sleep apnea, your body is in a crisis mode where it is working overtime, your heart rate is jumping to a higher level than you could produce if you were sprinting on a treadmill, cortisol is being rapidly introduced into your bloodstream in order to wake you up, you wake up several times a night gasping for air.

Yes, all that happens when you think you are sleeping!

The effect that cortisol has on the body as a stress hormone is making food turn into fat.

One of the effects of having these apneic events is that the body releases cortisol as part of the response to depriving our body of oxygen. It's the quickest way to metabolize food. When there is more cortisol in your bloodstream, you will gain weight easier and crave more simple sugars. Instead of being processed from the body or into muscle, cortisol stores more and more carbs into fat.

You will wake up in the morning feeling tired.

As a result, you will tend to exercise less due to fatigue caused by a lack of restorative sleep.

You are working hard to lose weight but you can’t seem to actually lose the weight

TMJ Awareness Month

There are a couple of holidays this month - TMJ Awareness. We want to tell you a little bit more about both so you can know what you need to be doing to make sure your mouth is in good shape.

The temporomandibular joint works as a hinge between your jaw and the rest of your skull. Unfortunately, disorders can lead to pain in your jaw joint and surrounding muscles. October is Dental Hygiene Month. Yes, it is yet another time for us to ask you about scheduling your next appointment, but we do it because we know why it's so important! When you come into our office, we do more than just clean the surface of your teeth. We do x-rays to examine parts of your mouth below the surface to make sure there is not any bone loss or tooth decay. We inspect for tooth decay, gum disease, cavities, and any teeth that may be in need of repair. And yes, we clean your teeth to get rid of tartar and plaque buildup that you cannot take care of on your own at home.

When you visit us, we want to make sure your oral health needs are taken care of and you leave better than when you came in. We want to be an essential part of your health care routine. A visit to us every three to six months can help prevent many health issues down the road.

September is Gum Care Month. Did you know that gum disease impacts about 67 million Americans? All of your daily brushing and flossing habits along with regular dental hygiene visits will help to keep gingivitis and periodontitis at bay. But what are these diseases and how can you keep your gums happy and healthy? We're glad you asked!

Gingivitis is caused by bacteria-filled plaque on your gum line. This is often painless, so many people go untreated, which can turn a little plaque into full-blown gum disease. Periodontitis, if it goes untreated, can lead to damaged soft tissue, destroyed bones in your jaw, and even tooth loss.

Tooth Fairy Day

August 22 is Tooth Fairy Day. But where did the tooth fairy originate?

The tooth fairy has been popularized in the United States by dentists, parents, and Hollywood. In Hollywood's case, the tooth fairy comes in the form of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. But many think the money-giving sprite originated in Northern European tradition, where children would receive the tand-fé or tooth fee when they lost their first tooth.

While in the US, children received a small reward of 5 cents back in the early 1900s for their teeth, some areas of the country have reported children receiving up to $5 per tooth nowadays.

Cindy has been our Treatment Coordinator since April 2021. She is the calm and smiling face that greets you everyday. She has been in the dental industry since 2014 and loves to help patients with their insurance and treatment needs. Cindy is our link to getting things done in a timely manner.

When she is away from the office, she loves to spend time with her family and friends, cuddling with her dog, Milo, and cheering on the White Sox. Cindy also loves the color pink and to snack on an occasional snickers candy bar.

Since the first case of COVID-19 was identified in the United States in January 2020, life has been full of changes. Worldwide there has been well over 120 million cases identified and nearly 3 million deaths globally.

Individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 who have/had severe gum and/or bone disease have shown to have a greater risk of more severe effects of COVID-19 . Of these patients that end up being hospitalized, the risk of death is increased by nearly 9 times due to the infection in their gums.

As always, it is pertinent to see your dental care provider regularly to help keep your mouth and overall wellbeing healthy. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, the dental field has taken more precautions than before to keep you safe. From the start of the pandemic, less than 1% of dentists have tested positive and only 3.1% of hygienists. The dental office is a safe place to be. If you have not seen your dentist in a longtime, go see them!

Dear Friends,

As many of you know Joanne and I have been anticipating relocating to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. As that date draws near, I have searched for someone I can trust with your continued care. To that end, I feel very fortunate to have developed a relationship with a family owned practice right in our neighborhood.

Doctors Mark and Lauryn Ligocki practice in a beautiful office in Oakbrook Terrace located at 1S224 Summit Avenue in the Loyola Professional Building.

After getting to know them, I can tell you that their demeanor and approach to patient care are very much the same as mine. As I've cared for you for almost 25 years, finding doctors with these qualities was the most important thing to me.

Dr. Mark and his daughter, Dr. Lauryn are members of several dental associations, take many hours of continuing education each year, mentor young dentists and dental students, support local charities such as Best Buddies, SEASPAR, Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Freedom Day, all while providing quality family dental care for their patients. When they are away from the office, they enjoy their time with family, sports, and donuts. They also cannot wait for Dr. Lauryn’s sister, Jocellyn, to join the practice in 2023. Dr. Mark’s wife, Joan, keeps both doctors on task, as she oversees the daily administrative teams. As you can see they are truly a family practice.

It is with somewhat mixed emotions that I make this announcement. It has also been my honor and a pleasure to not only care for your health, but to enjoy our relationships and to share in watching your families grow. Have found a caring dental practice to which I can transfer the responsibility of your care gives me comfort.

The trust that my patients have placed in me is truly humbling. I ask you and feel confident that you can place that same trust in both Dr. Ligocki’s and their team. In fact, many of you have asked me "who works on your teeth?". That's right, I've gotten my dental treatment with Dr. Ligocki, and I can attest to their gentle touch and quality of the work!

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

April is Oral Cancer Awareness month and OCF would like to invite you to join us in our national screening campaign to end oral cancer! Oral Cancer awareness in the American public is low. Approximately 54,000 people in the U.S. will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer this year. 132 new people in the US EVERY DAY will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer, and that one person EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY, 24/7/365 will die from it (The Oral Cancer Foundation, 2021).

A Freedom Day Thank You

This past March 19, 2021 the Team at Ligocki Dental Group provided about $2,500 of free dental care to veterans and active military.

February is Children's Dental Health Month!

Your Child's Dental Health Matters!

Hello Dental Family!

To some, February might mean valentines and chocolate, but for the dental health-conscious, there's another reason February is so special: National Children's Dental Health Month. Sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA), this month is a time to increase awareness about pediatric dental hygiene. By taking some time to talk to your kids about dental health — and even scheduling a dental checkup — you set a good example and precedent for the rest of the year.

Schedule an Appointment

One of the best ways you can celebrate the theme for February is to schedule an appointment with us. Regular cleanings should happen every 6 months, and the more exposure to the dentist that you give your kids, the more comfortable they will be when they visit the office. If you schedule an appointment in February, you will have the ideal amount of time before a back-to-school checkup in August.

Buy New Toothbrushes

Did you know that you are supposed to replace your toothbrushes every 3 to 4 months? The ADA warns that frayed bristles decrease the effectiveness of a toothbrush. National Children's Dental Health Month is the ideal time to toss out old toothbrushes and grab some new ones. Let your kids pick out toothbrushes with their favorite characters on them and toothpaste that they will like to use — for example, Colgate® 2 in 1 Toothpaste & Mouthwash — to get them excited about their regular hygiene routine.

Color a Chart

The ADA offers coloring pages and activities online to help celebrate National Children's Dental Health Month. Choose a chart-based coloring page, and have your kids color and customize a reminder to hang in the bathroom as a motivator. After a week of consistent morning and nighttime brushing, offer a reward, such as a fun outing.

Do a Brushing Checkup

If your kids tend to brush their teeth unattended, take some time this month to go with them to the bathroom to supervise their brushing habits. You might be surprised to find that one child brushes with only water and the other skips floss altogether. By performing a brushing checkup, you can see what steps your kids are missing and instruct them in the correct way to brush their teeth.

With a focus on oral hygiene and health, National Children's Dental Health Month may be even more important than Valentine's Day this February. By learning about proper dental hygiene as a family, you can get your kids more excited to brush every day and night (Colgate, 2021).

Our Office Is Reopening June 1st 2020! Here are some important updates you should know...

Dear Dental Family,

We hope this letter finds you and your family in good health. Our world has been through a lot over the last few months, and all of us are looking forward to resuming our normal habits and routines. While many things have changed, one thing has remained the same: our commitment to your health and safety.

Infection control has always been a top priority for our practice. Since the Covid-19 crisis, our infection control processes have been put on "steroids" so that when you receive care, it’s both overly safe and comfortable. We have been in direct contact with and are following infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We are kept up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued as Dr. Mark Ligocki voluntarily serves on the ADA's Health Policy Institute panel.

You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our patients and team. For example:

Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office.
We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.
You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.
Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.
We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.
